A step into City Garage is a step into American history—a 32-foot replica of Fort McHenry’s American Flag stands broadly at the end of Main Street and Francis Scott Key’s Star-Spangled Banner lyrics wrap every wall—a space soon filled by Baltimore’s leading innovative talent.

City Garage’s first event needed to bring an energy and passion equal to that of America’s great history and sought a partner that could draw Baltimore’s makers, innovators and entrepreneurs. BetamoreBaltimore’s global hub for entrepreneurship and education, was the obvious choice.

Last week, City Garage opened its doors to the public for the very first time at Beta City, Betamore’s annual event that brings together Baltimore’s greatest minds for a full day of live pitches, startup demos and a celebration of the City’s growing entrepreneurial community. With the help of Steelcase and The Verve Partnership, Main Street was transformed into the place to be on October 1st—even during the Ravens vs Steelers game.

Beta City was a defining moment for Baltimore. Music was pumping, photos were snapped, but most importantly, connections were being made. Right before our eyes, the gap between entrepreneurs and early-stage capital was closing.

“Betamore is about breaking down silos between people and organizations to benefit our entrepreneurial community. Beta City served as an embodiment of the partnerships and collaboration that make Baltimore the place to build a business.” – Jen Meyer, CEO, Betamore

The evening was a true example of the impact that can be made from having the right people in one room; in this case, 30+ showcasing startups, alongside hundreds of entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, angel investors and entrepreneurial leaders coupled with the support from leading city officials like Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and DBED Secretary, R. Michael Gill. The room had the energy of the collaborative environment envisioned for City Garage, which made for a uniquely special moment for Demian Costa who leads the efforts behind City Garage.

“Our opening night with Beta City exceeded expectations in every way. Bringing together technical.ly, Betamore, and Startup MD to celebrate entrepreneurs and innovators delivered an extraordinary crowd. We couldn’t be more pleased and look forward to many more celebrations to come.” – Demian Costa, Partner, Plank Industries
